November 30

Wednesday November 30
Opening
Let us place ourselves in the presence of God.
Close your eyes.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Gospel
Matthew 4:18-22
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.

Reflection
rembrant-sailing-in-a-stormToday is the feast of Saint Andrew. Andrew was the first apostle to find Jesus. Walking a long a beach Andrew and Peter find Jesus. This is in contrast to many people today who are loosing their faith and not trying to find God. Alec Guinness the actor who played Obi Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars films was also a non-believer in his earlier life. One night Alec went on a fishing trip. His fishing trip took him off the Italian coast near Croatia. During the night a massive storm came up consuming the ocean which Alec floated on. Alec was thrown around on the ocean with large waves and lighting which echoed and surrounded Alec. Alec thought he was going to die. At that point Alec made a deal, “God if you exist, let me survive”. Alec survived the terrible storm and came to the conclusion that “God existed”.

For some people God does not reveal God self in such vivid circumstances. But Alec saw something in that moment which made him change his mind. He had a conversion. The fear of death caused him to reconsider his position. How are we open when the storm comes in our life? Does God play a part in sailing our ship as it rests upon the ocean of life?

Pause for 1 minute to reflect on the Gospel….
