Who is Mary?

MARIST LAITY
ST GABRIEL'S
BEXLEY

Meeting: 11 April 2006
Topic: WHO IS MARY TO ME?
Presenter: Sr Gail Reneker, sm

Our ongoing Marist formation Group met after evening Mass on Tuesday 11 April in the Parish Hall at St Gabriel's Bexley. Sr Gail Reneker by her sensitive openness, simplicity, humility and understanding led us to recognise the real Mary in our lives. We each had a very personal response to the question "Who is Mary to me?" A response that has been shaped by our life formation, our experiences, our education and our understanding of our faith tradition.

We looked at Mary present in Scripture:

    A woman of faith (Lk 1: 26-38; Jn 19: 25-27)

    A woman who listened and wondered (Lk 2: 19, Lk 2: 51)

A woman whose heart was humble, open, obedient (Lk 8: 21)

A woman of prayer, sensitivity and action (Lk l: 39-56; Jn 2: 1-10)

A woman of great strength and freedom (Lk 1: 46-55 cf the Magnificat)

A woman in communion with others (Acts 1: 14.2)

A woman who knows, loves and follows Jesus his Mother and Disciple and whose only desire is to forward that God gives and promises to Jesus.
Sr Gail, using beautiful quotations from Fr Colin and Marie Chavoin, opened our eyes to the meaning of Mary for those who have been blessed to be chosen to live as Marists - 'by gracious choice' Marists enjoy a covenant relationship with her bearing her name and are called therefore to live her spirit: 'thinking, judging, feeling and acting as Mary ' to do her work.

The group learnt that Marists promote no particular Marian devotion. Rather Marists attempt to identify themselves with Mary's own consciousness and viewpoint. This requires Marists to have a deep relationship with Mary - one that leads us to focus with her on Jesus and on the Church and to be imbued with her way of being and acting.
