Through Mary's Eyes

A reflection on the Incarnation - Luke 2:6-7

Crib

What joy fills my heart! I praise you, Yahweh, for your love for us. Your promise is fulfilled. I hold in my arms my new-born.

Joseph placed the child in my arms and I gently wrapped him in swaddling clothes.

This good, kind, noble man, who lies beside me, is such a blessing. His pain and sorrow at finding this place, which houses feed for animals and barely offers protection from the cold night air, is troublesome to him. His eyes speak of anguish and despair. He is distraught. But the mystery that embraces, us, and the presence of the fragile child, bring exultation and surround us with your peace.

I look into the eyes of my child. He lies so still. He is so innocent, so pure. I wonder, Lord, what the future holds for him. I want so much to protect him, to keep him close to me.

Yet I know the Lord's spirit rests upon him, this child of mine. I know he is the promised one.

I seek your strength as Joseph and I strive to attend to the needs of our new-born son.

What do you need to ask the Lord this Christmas?

How does the Lord's spirit rest upon you?

Where is the spirit leading you?
