Where God Speaks to the Heart excerpts from Fr Michael Whelan’s Homily
God liberates people in and through the wilderness: “I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness ..“(Hosea 2:14)
The Exodus story continues in every age and in each of our lives.
Where is the wilderness today? Where are we most likely to hear God’s word spoken to us concretely now?
The wilderness is the place where distractions and ways of escape from what we should be facing are minimised. Maybe in the solitude and silence of contemplative prayer. The wilderness today of our poverty— of numbers ...of age.. Of ignorance.. of weakness.. of infidelity .. of lack of trust…..
“ We are your servants Lord, let it be done to us according to your word.”
“Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord.”
Many Catholics have a deep sense that the very Church itself is a wilderness for many…. The same circumstances in which Marists came into being in the 19th Century…
Is it not an essential part of our Marist vocation to be guides to people in the wilderness?
We become like Mary, Godbearers to a God-seeking world.
