Marist Places in Hunters Hill and Woolwich
Saint Peter Chanel’s Church in Woolwich is dedicated to the Marist missionary and first martyr of Oceania, who was murdered on the island of Futuna in 1841. The foundation stone was blessed by Archbishop Moran in 1890. Two years later parishioners gathered in what is today the sacristy for Mass and that was all that stood for seven years. In 1901 the trancepts were added. In 1970, 1988 and 2003 more work was carried out The church, as it stands today, remains unfinished. The Woolwich parish has one primary school, 'Villa Maria'. Within the boundaries there is the Marist Sisters College, a systemic secondary school for girls which began in 1908.
