TITLE: Marist Laity Australia - Simplicity, Flexibility, Inclusiveness

Mary and Son

Margaret Woods

Margaret WoodsHi, my name is Margaret Woods. I was lucky enough to be born into a loving family where a sense of spirituality was present through the commitment and dedication of both my parents and grandparents.

Born in Sydney I lived at Merrylands and grew up in the west as the population explosion was unfolding.  Merrylands, once filled with market gardens, is now not far from the geographically centre of Sydney.

During my childhood I was blessed to be educated in primary and secondary by the Marist Sisters. The spirit of the Marist Charism captured me very early in life.   I remember as a preschooler being lost amongst the grounds of the convert at Merrylands only to be rescued by Sr Nathanial (Anne David) who later taught me piano and singing.

I can’t really remember a time of not being Marist. I know this may sound strange, but I do believe the great love my Mother and Grandmother had for Mary was intuitively imparted to me and I found expression for this love in the Marist Charism. Mary was just always a part of my life!

This love drew me into Religious life with the Marist Sisters during my twenties, which gave me the greatest understanding and insights into the Charism and into life generally.  By thirty I was increasingly called to give expression to this Charism as a lay Marist and so left the sisters.

I now work as a Principal of a delightful primary school in the Catholic Education System, Sydney Archdiocese.  I enjoy the privilege and delight of assisting young students growth; spiritually, emotionally, physically, morally, academically and in the arts and sports. This role also allows me the opportunity of working with colleagues with whom I share and from whom I learn. It is a great privilege!

At heart I am drawn to the Marist Charism because of its simplicity. There is a wonderful balance between intellectual rigor and compassion of heart, between contemplative stillness and active contribution to the world. Through the Marist Charism I experience the spirit of Mary as tangible in the world, ever present, ever inviting, ever calling us forth!

Presently I have accepted the position as Co leader (with Andrew Dumas), of the Marist Laity National Committee, Australia. This is an exciting opportunity and I look forward to working with all those inspired to become part of the Marist Family.

Being part of the Marist Laity is a great honour and a wonderful experience that I know I will continue to enjoy. I believe that together as Marists, in our own small way, we can assist in embracing the world and the Church that is at times deeply fractured, and  create an alternative way, a Marian way, that will be give witness to life-giving moments, compassion, love, faith  and a great sense of hope.
