Father Michael Young sm
Michael was born Hong Kong in 1957. His family immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, in 1967 where he was educated by the Marist Sisters, Marist Brothers and Marist Fathers in Wellington. Michael entered the Marist Seminary, at Greenmeadows in Hawkes Bay, in 1976. He made his First Profession in 1978 and was ordained in 1983. On leaving the seminary with a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (STB) his first appointment was to the staff of St. Patrick's College, Silverstream, Wellington in 1984-85 where he completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA).
Appointments followed to the parish of Te Puke, 1986-87; the parish of St. Francis Xavier, Whangarei, 1988-90. Fr Michael became a staff member at the Religious Education Centre, in the Archdiocese of Wellington, 1991-92, until he was given leave to study for his Masters in Theology (ThM) at Weston Jesuit College in Cambridge Boston, 1992-93. On completion he returned to the staff of the Religious Education Centre, Wellington from 1994-98. Then he was appointed to the parish of St. Mary's Blenheim, 1999-200. After this Fr Michael was contracted to the Marist Coromandel Project Team for two years, 2002 - 03 before he was appointed to act as a resource person for adult education in the faith in the Auckland Diocese, 2004-05 (resident at St. Anne's Parish, Manurewa), and given leave in 2006 to begin his doctoral studies towards a Doctor of Theology (ThD) through the Catholic Institute of Sydney, Strathfield, the institute being a member of the Sydney College of Divinity.
