Mary and Son

TITLE: Profiles

Val Norris
Val Norris I was born in Northumberland, England and Migrated to Australia with my family as a very small child. I grew up in Sydney, completing my schooling and university education there. I met my husband through the Scouting movement and, when we married in 1969, we moved to Bowral where we lived for 10 years. We now live in Gosford.

It was in Bowral that I made my first Marist connections. As a teacher, I was part of a professional group which included teachers from several local schools, including the Marist Brothers at Mittagong. I gave up teaching when my children were young and it was only when we returned to Sydney in 1979 that I resumed my career - at Marist Brothers Eastwood. I moved to Cerdon in 1984 and it was there that my Marist connections were strengthened.

It was through my friendship with Helen Marshall that I became a member of her laity group and, with other members of that group, I officially became a lay Marist on 27 May 1995. The group continued to meet regularly until Helen's premature death. It was during that time that I was invited by Maria Baden to participate in planning meetings for what is now Marist Laity Australia. I have continued my involvement with Marist Laity and feel privileged to have met and become friends with so many wonderful people.
