TITLE: Marist Laity Australia - Simplicity, Flexibility, Inclusiveness

Mary and Son

I. Cana

Preparation
1. Praise of the Father.
2. Hail Mary. .

Text: John 2:1-11.

Setting: The scene is a wedding feast (which, in those days, lasted seven days!) in a small country village, undoubtedly involving all the people of the village as well as many guests. This incident occurs at the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus, before his death and glorification, which marked the beginning of the Church. Nevertheless, it tells us something about Mary's presence in the Church, and about the effect her presence has. As she will be present at the birth of the Church (at Calvary and at Pentecost) Mary is present here at the 'birth' of Jesus' mission as Messiah.

Grace: Ask God for the grace to feel more deeply his great love for you, and the love of Mary, your mother in the Church; and if it be his will, that you may perceive his gracious choice to belong to the Marist ' family.

Reflection:
1. Mary feels deep concern for the couple (for you?) because the wine has run out, and the joy of the feast and of their life together -- just beginning -- is threatened. She speaks to Jesus.
2. Mary says, 'Do whatever he tells you'.
3. An abundance -of the choicest wine (120 gallons!): the age of the Messiah, of the Kingdom of God, of Salvation, has come!

Conversation: At the end of the day, after reflecting on the above points, speak to Jesus and to Mary about the joy (or lack of it) in your life, or the joy (or lack of it) in your experience of the Church and of the world.

Journal: Record your reflections, and anything you have learned or felt, in your journal or notebook. Do this for each meditation.
