TITLE: Marist Laity Australia - Simplicity, Flexibility, Inclusiveness

Mary and Son

XII. Flight into Egypt

Preparation:
1. Praise of the Father.
2. Hail Mary.

Text: Matthew 2:13-14

Setting: Fr. Jean-Claude Colin, who was among the first group of Marists, described a curious way of thinking and acting. He said, 'I place myself in the home of Nazareth and from there I see all that I have to do'.

Grace: Ask God for a deeper understanding of Mary's faith, so that you might choose her as your model and guide in following Jesus.

Reflection: Listen as Mary recounts her experience of being an outcast and an exile because of Jesus, especially:

1. The journey to Egypt, made in haste and fear.

2. Life in a foreign land, not knowing the local language, cut off from family and from the land and faith of Israel.

3. Further realization that her life revolves around Jesus and the plan of the Father. Her life is not her own.

Conversation: Share with Mary your own experience of being, or your fears of being, an 'outcast' - either because of rejection by others; or because you choose to follow Christ rather than live by worldly values; or even because your own sins and failures have destroyed your confidence in yourself. Listen for her compassionate reply.

Journal: Record your reflections, and anything you have learned or felt, in your journal or notebook. Do this for each meditation.
