TITLE: Marist Laity Australia - Simplicity, Flexibility, Inclusiveness

Mary and Son

IV. Mary in the New-Born Church

Preparation
1. Praise of the Father.
2. Hail Mary

Text: Acts of the Apostles 1:12-14; 4:32-35.

Setting: This meditation brings together two texts that the early Marists saw closely related: Mary's presence among the apostles and disciples at Pentecost, and the description of the early Church that developed after Pentecost. The text simply tells us that Mary 'was there.' It seems to be inviting us to use our imagination - as did the first Marists - to feel Mary's influence on the early Church, and to form a picture of her activity among those first Christians, her new family.

Grace: Ask God for the grace to feel more deeply his great love for you, and the love of Mary, your mother in the Church; and if it be his will, that you may perceive his gracious choice to belong to the Marist ' family.

Reflection:
1. The apostles and disciples are perplexed at Jesus' absence since he was taken from them at his ascension. The wine of Jesus' presence has run out.

2. 'Mary, the mother of Jesus, is there.' Suddenly, the new wine is poured forth in abundance - the Holy Spirit - who fills them with light, strength, enthusiasm and joy.

3. The community is 'of one heart and one mind.' And no one is needy among them, for they share everything with one another. The apostles boldly proclaim the resurrection of Jesus. And the mother Jesus is there.

Conversation: Speak to Mary about your life in her new family, the Church.

Journal: Record your reflections, and anything you have learned or felt, in your journal or notebook. Do this for each meditation.
