TITLE: Marist Laity Australia - Simplicity, Flexibility, Inclusiveness

Mary and Son

XI. Presentation

Preparation:
1. Praise of the Father.
2. Hail Mary.

Text: Luke 2:22-40.

Setting: Fr. Jean-Claude Colin, who was among the first group of Marists, described a curious way of thinking and acting. He said, 'I place myself in the home of Nazareth and from there I see all that I have to do'.

Grace: Ask God for a deeper understanding of Mary's faith, so that you might choose her as your model and guide in following Jesus.

Reflection: Remember that while Mary is speaking with you, she has already seen him encounter some opposition, even at Nazareth (see Luke 4:16-30),' but that Calvary is still hidden in the future. Listen as Mary recounts the words of Simeon, words whose full impact she hasn't yet experienced:

1. Hearing Simeon foretell a universal mission for her son: 'he shall be a revealing light for all the nations, and the glory of your people Israel'.

2. Hearing Simeon say that Jesus will be 'a sign that will be opposed, a sign of contradiction'.

3. Hearing Simeon predict that 'a sword will pierce your own soul'.

Conversation: Share with Mary your own hesitation to make a commitment because of the uncertainty of the future, and listen for her response.

Journal: Record your reflections, and anything you have learned or felt, in your journal or notebook. Do this for each meditation.
