A Mother's AccountThis woman tells us that as a child she admired Mary but loved Jesus. But as she grew older and took a deeper look at Mary in the Gospels she found a woman with whom she could identify and love deeply. 'It is Mary, the humble, caring loving Mother of Jesus, the hard working and suffering woman into whose care for Lord on the cross placed us with whom we ordinary women can identify . . .'
She continues: “I am a very old woman and neither my academic credits nor my life qualify me to speak authoritatively about our Lord or his Mother. But I can speak for myself and state that I love Mary the mother of Jesus more and more as I get older. I love her not because she can get me through an exam, heal me when I am sick, or comfort me with an undeserved little or big miracle, not even because she is the 'female principle of the divine' (Forget it.). I love Mary because she lived, loved and suffered as an ordinary woman even though she was extraordinary and the circumstances of her life were extraordinary. She was humble and was one of us. She sanctified all that is actual and important to us ordinary women: childhood, maidenhood, virginity, family, husband, household, motherhood, the loss of loved ones, widowhood, hard work. She was flexible, adaptable, giving, loving, serving . . . you name it”.
