Mary and Son

Mary, our friend

Marcellins maryThomas Aquinas said that the only object of faith is God. Mary cannot be the object of faith. Our trust is in God. Our trust is in the Lord. Then who is Mary for us? We can humanly speak of having trust in Mary and faith in Mary; but it would be better to say that we believe with Mary. We share with her. We have a beautiful word in English called “confidence” from the Latin, “confido” “to believe with somebody someone” who is a friend. I think we can rightfully use it here.

Mary can become our friend because she stood with Jesus at the beginning of the journey, with Jesus at the end of the journey, and in between, gave him space to walk, to listen, to suffer and to feel, to grow and to surrender. This showed her motherly concern. Through her motherly concern he learned to laugh the way she laughed. He learned to love the way she loved. He learned to wait the way she waited, to listen the way she listened, to hope the way she hoped. What was finally in his eyes, was first in hers. Mary also leads us in our journey through life. We cannot believe alone. We believe together. That is the mystery of the Church: Mary believes with us. She is our
friend; we walk together with her.
