Whether or not? The debate was bitter for such a sacred subject – the placing of a statue in front of the Church. It seemed that an agreement would never be reached. Finally, an old man, his face weathered with wisdom, proposed that the statue show Mary holding the Christ-child. His reasoning was simple, but profound: “Take away the mother, and you destroy the Child”. And realizing the truth of his observation, the people acceptedhis proposal. Our own life experience likewise indicates that his insight should not be overlooked. We have all met people who, never having experienced maternal love and care, seem to be incapable of true love and compassion. Theirs is a tragic approach to life.
