Michael shares his lifelong connection with the Marist community, which began when he was ten years old and continued through his education with the Marist Brothers at Mossman and later at a high school in North Sydney. His profound admiration for his teachers led him to join the brothers for some time, and although he ultimately left, he continued teaching in Marist schools as a lay teacher and maintained strong friendships within the community.
The phrase 'strength in gentleness' encapsulates the Marist ethos for Michael, embodying the qualities seen in Mary from the Gospels—a blend of strength and gentleness, reflecting a balance of masculinity and femininity that leads to a holistic spirituality. This spirituality is about being open and receptive to God, emulating Mary's presence, which he strives to live out through being present to others.
He speaks fondly of the friendships he has formed within the Marist Brothers, particularly mentioning Peter Carol, and he expresses gratitude for the broadened Marist family that includes many laypeople. He finds inspiration from local coordinators and groups, including the Sydney City Marist group and the Mascot local group, where he serves as the local coordinator. These groups provide a sense of family and belonging, which extends to his colleagues at Mascot, both within and outside of the association.
Michael also cherishes his personal life, especially his wife Joanne, to whom he's been married for over 30 years. Together, they enjoy a rich social life with friends, dining out, watching movies and plays, and traveling—a hobby they plan to pursue more once Michael has more time after retiring from his current role.
