A Mothers Day Reflection

This Mother’s Day reflection reminds us that the world needs more compassion, mercy, patience, and love rather than war, power, and conflict. Inspired by Mary standing beside Jesus at the cross, the reflection calls people to become a caring presence for others in times of suffering and loneliness. Through examples of service, prayer, fasting, patience, and stillness in God’s presence, it encourages people to become the “feminine face of God” by bringing hope, kindness, and justice into the world. The reflection challenges us to live the Beatitudes with courage and compassion, becoming instruments of peace who comfort the vulnerable and allow God’s love to flow through our lives.

1Marist Laity Australia Newsletter - December 2023
The December edition of the Marist Laity newsletter reflects on the organization's future engagement with young adults and those seeking reflective opportunities, with a follow-up meeting planned in February 2024 and events throughout the year to deepen prayer and reflection. It also touches on the enduring conflicts where Jesus lived, with a poignant reflection from Fr. Jim Carty SM and a message of hope from Pope Francis, emphasizing God's unwavering presence. The newsletter extends gratitude to committee members and bids farewell to Michael Evison as he retires. It memorializes three influential Marists who recently passed away, celebrating their legacy and contribution to the community. Additionally, it highlights the impact of Street Retreats, where students engage with the homeless in Sydney, fostering compassion and understanding beyond mere observation.

2Making the Whole World Marist
Our aim is to make the whole world Marist. If I said this to theologians or to anyone else in Germany they would frown. In German the word 'Marist' ('maristisch') sounds rather strange, if not ideological, like every word in German ending in 'istisch'. Even my spiritual director told me last week that he knew there was a religious order called 'Marists' but their name did not make him think of Mary. As students we used to make fun of the name by adding an x which turned 'Marist'

4Statement on Domestic Violence - Marist JPIC Committee Australia
The Marist Family Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Committee’s statement on domestic violence highlights it as a serious violation of human dignity and a widespread yet often hidden issue in Australia, where many victims suffer in silence due to fear and stigma. Grounded in Gospel values and the Marist tradition, the document emphasises the urgent need for awareness, education, and compassionate action, supported by Church teachings from leaders such as Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II, which affirm the dignity of every person and condemn all forms of violence. It outlines practical strategies including education, collaboration with support services, training, and community outreach, while calling members to advocate for victims, provide safe and supportive environments, and promote respectful relationships. Ultimately, the statement is a strong call to action, urging the Marist community to stand in solidarity with survivors, challenge harmful cultural norms, and actively work towards building a culture of peace, justice, and healing where all people are treated with dignity and love.

5Marist Way Australia Newsletter - April 2026
The April 2026 Marist Way Australia newsletter reflects on the beginning of the year with gratitude and renewal, highlighting the significant contribution of Maria Baden and welcoming Gail McCann to the leadership team. Cathy Larkin’s Lenten reflection explores the deeper meaning of Christ’s death, drawing on theological insights to emphasise that the cross should not be softened or avoided, but understood as central to transformation—where death and life are intimately connected through the Paschal Mystery. The newsletter also shares upcoming opportunities for formation and community, including the Fourvière celebration, a Marist retreat, a pilgrimage to key Marist sites in Rome and France, and the Marian Lecture featuring Rev Dr Sarah Bachelard. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on living the Marist charism through reflection, community, and Marian spirituality, inviting members to embrace both the challenges and blessings of life with faith, guided by Mary’s example and the hope of Easter.
