Cyclone Yasa in Fiji

Please Pray for the people of Fiji affected by cyclone Yasa

At least two people have died after Cyclone Yasa made landfall in Fiji on Thursday night.

Authorities have begun determining the true extent of destruction caused by hurricane-force winds, flooding and massive waves.

The category five storm tore across the northern island of Vanua Levu, with winds gusting as high as 345 kilometres per hour.

National Disaster Management Office said two deaths had been confirmed, including a three-month-old baby.

Up to 93,000 others were affected by the cyclone, the Disaster Office said — adding that those numbers may rise as communications are restored with affected areas.

Key points:
  • At least 23,000 people took shelter in more than 300 evacuation centres overnight
  • Cyclone Yasa is one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the southern hemisphere
  • Amid a curfew and loss of communication, the true extend of damage is only starting to be revealed
