   - Who You Say I Am

Who am I that the highest King would welcome me?
I was lost, but He brought me in
Oh, His love for me
Oh, His love for me
Who the Son sets free
Oh, is free indeed
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
Free at last, He has ransomed me
His grace runs deep
While I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me
Yes, He died for me
Who the Son sets free
Oh, is free indeed
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
I am chosen, not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me
I am who You say I am
I am chosen, not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me
I am who You say I am
I am who You say I am
Who the Son sets free
Oh, is free indeed
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
I am chosen, not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me
I am who You say I am
I am chosen, not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me
I am who You say I am
I am chosen, not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me
I am who You say I am
Oh, I am who You say I am
Yes, I am who you say I am
Who the Son sets free
Oh, is free indeed
I'm a child of God, yes, I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God, yes, I am

The song 'Who You Say I Am' is a contemporary Christian worship song that speaks to the identity and freedom that individuals find in Jesus Christ. The lyrics encapsulate several key theological concepts that are central to Christian belief:

Divine Welcome and Love: The song begins with a sense of wonder that God, referred to as the 'highest King,' would offer a welcome to us. This reflects the Christian doctrine of grace, which is the unearned and loving invitation from God to have a relationship with Him.

Lost and Found: The lyrics 'I was lost, but He brought me in' refer to the Christian experience of being spiritually lost or separated from God and then being brought into a relationship with Him, which Christians believe is possible through Jesus Christ.

Redemption and Freedom: 'Who the Son sets free, Oh, is free indeed' echoes the words of Jesus in John 8:36, indicating that those whom Jesus liberates are truly free. This freedom is often understood as liberation from sin and the consequences of sin, which is spiritual death.

Identity as God's Children: The chorus 'I'm a child of God, yes, I am' is a declaration of a new identity in Christ. It reflects the New Testament teaching that believers are adopted into God's family and thus become His children (Galatians 4:4-7).

Grace and Sacrifice: The lines 'Free at last, He has ransomed me / His grace runs deep / While I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me' speak to the Christian belief in Jesus' atoning sacrifice. Jesus is believed to have died to pay the ransom for sin, offering grace (unmerited favor) to believers.

Belonging and Assurance: 'In my Father's house / There's a place for me' refers to the sense of belonging and assurance of eternal life that Christians find in Jesus' promise of a place for them in heaven, as mentioned in John 14:2-3.

Chosen and Embraced by God: The affirmation 'I am chosen, not forsaken' counters feelings of abandonment or worthlessness with the biblical promise that God has chosen and embraced individuals as His own.

God's Support: 'You are for me, not against me' is a declaration of God's support and favor, countering the fear that God might be indifferent or opposed to one's wellbeing.

In essence, 'Who You Say I Am' is an affirmation of the identity, worth, and status that, according to Christian faith, are given by God to those who believe in Jesus Christ. It's a declaration that a person's true identity is not defined by their past, their mistakes, or their circumstances, but by what God says about them in the Bible. This song is often used in worship services to encourage believers to embrace and celebrate their identity as children of God, liberated and loved by Him.

Questions for further reflection and discussion
  1. How does understanding yourself as a 'child of God' influence the way you perceive your worth and make decisions in your life? Discuss times when you have felt chosen or forsaken and how this song's message might alter your perspective during such moments.
  2. What does being 'set free' by the Son mean to you in a practical sense? Reflect on areas of your life where you have experienced this freedom. Additionally, how can this understanding of freedom inspire you to live differently or offer freedom to others?
  3. The song speaks to the assurance of having a place in the 'Father's house' and being 'for me, not against me.' How can these assurances affect the way you face challenges and uncertainties in your life? Discuss the importance of these assurances in cultivating trust and peace in your relationship with God and with others.
Final Prayer

Loving Father,

We come before You with hearts full of gratitude, knowing that in Your eyes, we are more than our mistakes, more than our fears, and more than our earthly identities. We are Your children, chosen and loved by You. Thank You for welcoming us into Your family, for calling us out of the darkness into Your marvelous light.

Lord, we stand in awe of the freedom that You have given us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. A freedom not just from the bonds of brokenness, but the freedom to live, to love, to serve, and to be all that You have created us to be. Help us to live out this liberty with responsibility and to extend it to those around us who are still bound.

In the moments when we feel forsaken, remind us that we are chosen by You. When the world tells us we are unworthy, let us hear Your voice declaring that we are precious in Your sight. May we find the courage to believe that You are for us, not against us, and that no circumstance can ever change Your unfailing love for us.

As we go forward, let us hold onto the assurance that there is a place for us in Your house—now and forevermore. This promise gives us the strength to face the trials of this world and the hope to look forward to eternal life with You.

In the difficult times, when doubt and fear cloud our hearts, remind us of who You say we are. Let this truth resonate in the deepest parts of our being and become the foundation upon which we build our lives.

Thank You, Father, for Your grace that runs so deep, for the sacrifice of Jesus, and for the presence of Your Spirit, which guides us daily. May we always find our identity in You, and may our lives be a testament to the life-changing power of Your love.

In Jesus' Name, we pray,

Amen.
