Yesterday I had an operation. I felt a little scared and worried as to what would happen. Lying almost naked with just a patient gown with no underpants. Prior, as my wife drove me to the hospital at 5 a.m a song came over the radio by Leona Lewis. I felt god speaking directly to me through the song.
'Light up, light up. As if you had a choice even if you can hear my voice. I will be right beside you dear'
Tears began to form as I listened to the song as we drove along. Rain fell. But, I felt god speaking to me through this song. The feeling of vulnerability. Being wheeled on a bed into a cold and strange room. This song formed hope in my heart. This song stayed with me. As we went into the hospital in the darkness I could continue to hear gods voice speaking to me through the song. Interiorly.
It reminded me of Jesus exposed on the cross. Naked. The events which led to his execution were beyond his control. Ultimately in our lives we to do not control many things. When we are vulnerable and exposed this lack of control feels so much larger.
Jesus was exposed. The wind was blowing at the place of the skull. Many people crying. Other people were shouting accusations. In that moment a small group of women stood round with one of the apostles John. Hope stood in the darkness at Golgotha on that day. The place of death.
For me the people with kind thoughts and the people praying for me from a distance were like the group at Golgotha providing hope and a sense of care. Modern apostles standing together for someone they love.
But we will all face this darkness. We will all come to moments of suffering, moments of vulnerability, when we feel lost and we will all go through the process of dying.
We are called to step into these places of darkness. To bring justice, where there is Injustice. To bring peace, amongst conflict. To bring healing, amongst illness. To bring positive thinking, amongst negative thinking. To be an active voice where there has been dispossession. We can be the voice for the poor. We can be the voice for the forgotten.
We can remain silent. Gods voice can be born in this world today through your own life. The invisible becomes visible. Through hope. In our suffering. In our pain. In our vulnerability. Exposed. Naked. When we are lost. This causes us to look beyond the self.
We call upon a greater force to hold us up, when we have fallen apart.
