   - Remember who you are

In the cinematic masterpiece 'The Lion King,' we find Simba grappling with his identity and destiny. The spectral vision of his father, Mufasa, implores him to 'remember who you are,' a pivotal moment that ignites Simba's journey back to his rightful place. However, it is his encounter with the sagacious Rafiki that serves as the true catalyst for Simba's awakening. Rafiki's challenge and the realization of his family's plight galvanize Simba to shift his focus from the frivolities of an aimless existence to a profound desire to forge a difference.

Our Western worldview often simplifies life into linear narratives—start and end, black and white, good and evil. But life’s rich tapestry is far more complex and interwoven than such binary thinking allows.

In the rousing climax of 'The Lion King,' the concept of 'the circle of life' comes to the fore, a theme that echoes throughout Pope Francis's 'Laudato Si',' his 2015 encyclical letter. Pope Francis delves into the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the natural world, underscoring the imperative for sustainable progress and the ethical consequences of our environmental footprint. 'Laudato Si'' elucidates the interconnectedness of the cosmos, postulating that the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the welfare of humanity—proposing a worldview that is circular rather than linear.

This circular perception is mirrored in the Christian liturgical year, a cycle of birth celebrated at Christmas and death commemorated on Good Friday. Yet it transcends even this, spiraling into a deepening understanding of our shared existence that beckons us to engage with the cycles of life.

Such a perspective isn't merely an abstract notion observed from afar. It suggests that our existence is capable of transcending the apparent, stirring into a profound awakening.

Our cultural inclinations towards entertainment, consumerism, and individualism veil our perception, offering the mirage of simplicity where complexity lies beneath. How, then, do we lift the veil to grasp the profound stratum of our essence and purpose?

To traverse this path and go deeper, we must heed varied signposts—each unique to stages of our journey. Like the monkey’s Rafiki’s necessary blunt wisdom, sometimes a jarring revelation is what it takes to stir our awareness.

At times, withdrawal is necessary—as Jesus's sojourn into the desert illustrates—granting us a fresh lens to view our circumstances.

Often, the road less trodden, laden with its tribulations, is the very path that draws us into the full spectrum of our existence, confronting us with the reality we might rather elude.

We must also pause to listen intently, embracing moments of epiphany, as Mary did upon the angel’s annunciation. Who are the angels who have a message for our lives?

Seeking instances of awe and wonder—the first cry of a newborn, the serene surrender of a sunset, the solemnity of a final farewell of a life—can jolt us into the recognition of the divine dialogue through our experiences.

Our lives, encircling us back to the essence of being, beckon us at each juncture. Will we remember our higher calling, or will we tread the worn path of complacency?

The journey we embark upon demands faith and hope, and it is love that sets our feet in motion. For God is love—this is the bedrock of the Christian faith.

This love is a force so potent that it gave us the incarnate Christ. It is the love of our parents that brought us into being. It is celebrated in the Eucharist as the manifestation of divine affection.

Love transcends mere emotion; it is the foundation of relationship, the everyday 'yeses' that affirm the good in each other. Yet, in its truest essence, love remains a mystery, one that forms the very circle of our existence.
