- Is Jesus truly in the bread and the wine at mass?
Pause for 30 seconds and reflect on the question.Pause NOW….
It raises a deeper question does it not? Our scientific and rational minds cannot comprehend such as reality. As the first century Jewish people questioned “How can he (Jesus) give us his flesh to eat?†We are like first century disbelievers. This does not make sense.
Or maybe we need blind faith. “Just believe†people say. “Have faith†people sayâ€. But to a degree there is something immature about this. Blind faith is like shallow water. We only enter so far. We do not fully immerse ourselves in the waves of the ocean. We can quote catechism for the answers. We can quote the Bible for the answers. But somehow, this does not more fully answer the question.
But, may not knowing is the answer. Maybe having a sense of curiosity and a sense of wonder enables us to more fully to be open to the question. Not in a fixed way. Like science or like rational thinking. Being open to the question, in our own lives, may open us up to the possibility of Jesus alive in our own life today.
As the poet “Rainer Maria Rilke†said….
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.â€
